Can I cut my plant back?

I have a standing variety of Chenille plant and it has one main stalk and a tiny stalk sprouting off the main one. I am wondering if I can cut back the main stalk. The plant is starting to look really bare because it lost all it's leaves and isn't blooming. Will cutting it back force growth or kill it? Please seasoned house plants veterans help me!
